Regional Commonwealth Writers' Prize
After edging towards prominence for a decade, the Australian novelist Steven Carroll has emerged as the winner of the 2008 Commonwealth Writers' Prize for best book in the South-East Asia and South Pacific region.
Carroll's sixth novel, The Time We Have Taken, was chosen for the £1000 ($2100) prize over a shortlist of five other Australian novels and is also among nine novels longlisted for the Miles Franklin Award for the best novel about Australian life.
