There are more than 200 Australian Indigenous

others have been destroyed, live in the memories of the elderly, or are being
revived by their communities. This site has annotated links to 224 resources
for about 70 languages. About 33% of these resources are produced or
published by Indigenous people.

Australian Indigenous Art
http://www.cultureandrecreation.gov.au/articles/indigenousart/
Australian Indigenous art is the oldest ongoing tradition of art in the world.
Initial forms of artistic Aboriginal expression were rock carvings, body
painting and ground designs, which date back more than 30,000 years. Art has
always been an important part of Aboriginal life, connecting past and present,
the people and the land, and the supernatural and reality.

Do you have Aboriginal families in your school? Ask them.
able to celebrate. We found one family with an uncle visiting for a few
weeks. He taught all our Aboriginal students some traditional dances. We
also asked the year 5/6 Aboriginal students for their favourite music and did
modern dance performances (modern culture is as valid as traditional culture).
The whole school sang Christine Anu's "My Island Home" with clapsticks,
powerpoint slides and lots of flag-waving. It's home to all of us!
I have a file of traditional games gleaned from the internet. Just Google
["traditional games" Aboriginal] to find a collection of useful
sites.
These activities are fun, take little preparation and all students seem to enjoy
them. Email me off-list if you cannot find them.
There are plenty of available performers - storytellers, musicians,
dancers etc if you want to go that route. I think these are valuable but the
things you do yourself make closer connections for students.
Taba Naba is an easy dance from Torres Strait that all students can learn.
It is a sit-down dance so the whole school can do it in assembly.
Christine Anu sings and demonstrates it with The Wiggles on their video
"it's a Wiggly Wiggly World". I could not buy a copy at my local shops
but got one from e-bay. If you like this song/dance, I can send you some
variations in the choreography that I have learned from authentic teachers and
use regularly with students of different ages.
Check here. http://www.caritas.org.au/education/ed_resource_cd.htm
for the Caritas Reconciliation CD and study guide. It is cheap and really good.
Our senior classes sang the Paul Kelly song "From Little Things Big
Things
Grow" while the students acted out the famous Gough Whitlam / Vincent
Lingiari scene when the Gurindji received title to their land after long
years of waiting and lobbying etc. The whole story of the Gurindji people
is amazing to our students who are all too young to remember.
