The Signmaker's Assistant by Tedd Arnold.  Norman, the assistant is very foolish and irresponsible.  He takes advantage of the signmaker's absence and then regrets it.  He realizes his selfishness and apologizes and fixes everything.  It's a good jumping off point about responsibility.  It's for grades 1st-2nd.
