A page-turning mix of science fiction and noir thriller

Area 10

Christos N. Gage and Chris Samnee. DC/Vertigo Crime, $19.99(184p) ISBN 978-1-40121-067-0

In a page-turning mix of science fiction and noir thriller, New York City detective Adam Kamen is on the trail of the serial killer Henry the Eighth, so named for his penchant for decapitating his victims. Kamen is a familiar character—hard-boiled, independent, a guy with a tough exterior but emotions that run deep. A head injury in the midst of the investigation gives Kamen unusual powers and leads to an exploration of trepanation—deliberately drilling a hole in the skull—as well as introducing him to a beautiful psychiatrist who develops an interest in his case.

And Another Thing...

~ Eoin Colfer

And Another Thing . . . is the rather unexpected, but very welcome, sixth installment of the Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy series. It features a pantheon of unemployed gods, everyone's favorite renegade Galactic President, a lovestruck green alien, an irritating computer, and at least one very large slab of cheese.

The economic impact of Harry Potter

From  the Economist: "The recession of 2008-09 has been accompanied by bold claims about businesses’ economic importance. As carmakers teetered many people put it about that one in ten American jobs depended on the industry. The figure turned out to include taxi drivers. Similarly adventurous claims have been made for telecoms and road-building. As a single-handed creator of jobs and wealth, though, few can match the writer Joanne Rowling."

‘Avatar’ = ‘Pocahontas’ In Space

Matt Bateman writing for Huffington Post says ;

James Cameron worked on "Avatar" for over a decade. That makes sense. It takes a long time to create the technology needed and to completely RIP OFF Disney's "Pocahontas." Sure moves borrow from movies all the time, but c'mon James, "Avatar" might as well be "Pocahontas In Space."

He follows with a picture of a book report that points out the amazing similarities.  Read it here:  http://bit.ly/5se0nf

Harry Potter, Internet transform book industry

Boy wizard catapults kids' stories to forefront; technology alters how people buy, read books

There probably hasn't been a decade that saw so much change in the book industry since Johannes Gutenberg came up with the movable-type printing press about 560 years ago.

Many factors contributed to that change, but two tower above the rest: Harry Potter and the Internet.
