Debt... It's a 4-letter word that can be just as obscene as those other 4-letter words that aren't fit to print!

With more than 500 million credit cards floating around the U.S., buying more than we should is just so darn easy. After all, it only takes a simple swipe of the credit card or a few mouse clicks to buy that pair of shoes, fancy sweater, designer jeans, or new cell phone we think we absolutely- positively-can't-live-without.

You may always tell yourself you'll pay everything off when the credit card bill arrives, but when it does, the temptation of just paying the minimum balance is so strong.
Before you know it, you're fully engulfed in D-E-B-T.

Even if your debts are minor and you think they'll be easy to manage, here are 4 reasons why you need to get yourself out of debt - and avoid it like the plague for the rest of your life:

1. You don't want to be stressed out all the time.

Even a little bit of debt can keep you up at night or give you a headache that won't go away. And the more debt you rack up, the more stress you're going to feel. If you want to avoid all of the serious physical and emotional problems that come with stress, keep yourself out of debt. After all, daily life can be stressful enough; you don't need to heap any more stress on yourself!

2. You might end up getting divorced.

Did you know that financial issues lead to more U.S.
divorces than anything else? It's hard to believe, but it's true! Millions of couples argue over bills and debate spending vs. saving - and, sadly, many of them wind up getting divorced over it. Every marriage takes work, but you're making that work even tougher if you're letting debt get in the way of the relationship between you and your spouse.

3. Your kids may never get to go to college.

All of the money you spend on interest payments every month would be doing much more for you if it were sitting in an interest-bearing college fund for your kids. Every day you spend in debt, you're making it tougher and tougher on your kids to go to college. And the last thing you probably want is to make your kids apply for a bunch of student loans.
Then, they'll graduate in a sea of debt of their own!

4. You may never get to retire.

Do you dream of spending your golden years knitting in a rocking chair or playing golf every day? If you're immersed in debt, you may wind up working until you're 80 or 85, because you don't have a "nest egg" to live off of!

If you're trying to bring wealth into your life - whether it's the material kind like money and possessions or the emotional kind like happiness and contentment - you're probably focusing on specific techniques like affirmations and visualizations. You're probably also keeping an eye out for new opportunities that can help you feel happier and become more successful.

That's all well and good, but have you ever thought about the other things you're doing? You know, the things that are counteracting your positive behavior and bringing negativity into your life.

If you want to live a life of abundance and prosperity, don't let yourself fall victim to these 3 things:

1. Telling yourself you don't have "enough".

Every time you grumble about the bills in the mail or pass up that outfit in the window because you don't have the money for it, you're really telling yourself you don't have enough. That way of thinking just breeds negativity and, soon enough, you'll find yourself drowning in it.

Instead, tell yourself you always have enough - whatever "enough" is. Whether it's money, time, or confidence, tell yourself (out loud if you have to) you've got plenty of what you need. That way, you'll be focused on the positives, instead of the negatives. It may take some real effort on your part, but it's well worth it.

2. Spending money you don't have.

A surefire way to get yourself into trouble is by spending money you don't have. It's not a way to get over the feeling that you don't have "enough". You will not be able to "trick" the world into thinking you're wealthy or successful. You'll simply wind up feeling worse.

Instead, start by being "wealthy" on the inside; it's really not that hard to accomplish. All you have to do is act like a wealthy person would - by feeling relaxed, content, blessed, and generous. Once you do that, you can work on being wealthy on the outside.

3. Not taking action.

When you're living in a negative mindset, you constantly feel defeated. If you feel like everything you do is futile, you won't bother doing ANYTHING. After all, it's not going to do any good, no matter how hard you try, right?!

This can be a dangerous cycle, but you can get yourself out of it. However, it will take some work. Pick something you're unhappy with - like your job - and make a conscious effort to change it. For example, start looking for other jobs, get your resume together, or talk to your friends about potential job opportunities they may know about. None of these actions are particularly earth-shattering, but they'll get you moving in the right direction. And, every time you take a small step, it becomes easier to take a big step.

You'll have to work hard to achieve physical and emotional prosperity. It's "easier" to be negative and let the world bring you down, but by thinking, feeling, and acting the right way, you can overcome that negativity and live a richer life!

Lots of people think the holiday season is the time of year when budgets and limits can go right out the window. Some people may start out with a budget, but then they see that absolute-must-have-can't-live-without present and their carefully-contrived budget goes right out the window.

If you think you have to spend a ton of money to have a great Christmas, think again. And, just because you set a budget for yourself doesn't mean you're "cheap"; it means you're "smart".

But how do you spend wisely at Christmas time without looking "cheap"?

Follow these 5 tips:

1. Harness the power of gift cards.

They're small, they can be purchased right at the last minute, and they let you set the price you want to pay. Have a gadget-lover in the family? Get a Best Buy gift card. Even if $10 or $20 won't pay for that set of speakers he's had his eye on, it'll help defray the cost a bit.

Have a teenage son who's impossible to shop for? Get him an iTunes gift card. Even $10 will get him about 10 songs he'll love.

Have a cousin that never seems to pull his head out of a book? Get him a gift card to Barnes and Noble, Amazon, or his local bookstore.

Have a pre-teen daughter who loves to hang out with her friends at the movies? Give her a $10 gift card to your local movie theater. It'll pay for two matinee tickets. Or, get her a gift card to Blockbuster and throw in a microwaveable bag of popcorn or a box of her favorite candy to munch on.

The best part about gift cards is you can tailor them to anyone's interests. If it's Christmas Eve and you're stuck finding a present for someone, go buy them a gift card. If you want to avoid the mall altogether, most grocery stores have a ton of gift cards to choose from right at the registers!

2. Indulge someone's sweet tooth.

If you have a coffee lover in the family, Starbucks has products that won't cost you an arm and a leg. Even if you only have $10 to spend, you can get your coffee-loving loved one a pouch of freshly-ground coffee, a new mug, or a new type of biscotti they'll be sure to enjoy.

Or, if your recipient is more into ice cream, head to Cold Stone Creamery - where you can get a pint of their favorite flavor. If you look wisely, you might even be able to find a few coupons to enclose with the gift!

3. Focus on accessories.

You might not be able to afford the latest gadgets, but thanks to SkinIt.com you can accessorize gadgets! At SkinIt, you can pick from thousands of "skins" that go on laptops and mobile devices - sort of like a giant sticker. Each "skin" is about $15, and it can give even an old gadget a brand new feel!

4. Help with bigger purchases.

OK, so you might not have the money to pay for your best friend's calls back to her homeland, but you can give her a prepaid phone card that helps offset some of the charges.
Even if you only spend $10 or $20, your friend can talk to people all over the world - thanks, in part, to you!

5. When in doubt, head to Amazon.

Amazon has great deals on just about everything. Even if you're stuck on a present for the pickiest person you know, you can rest easy giving them a $10 or $20 gift card to Amazon. If you want to be really unique, you can even have a gift card sent to your friend in a Facebook post!

Life is full of trite cliches. One of the famous ones that I've personally found to not be entirely true is this: there isn't a free lunch. Well, sure there is! Well, maybe not lunches, but the overall sentiment is otherwise categorically untrue. => http://bit.ly/o6849c
