Ingo Titze demonstrates an easy technique that uses a simple straw for hard-working voices. Variations of the straw technique has roots in Northern Europe and has been used for several hundred years. Professor Titze has studied this specific technique scientifically resulting in several scientific peer reviewed publications.

It works!!

The quote today is from Jonathan Swift ...

In oratory the greatest art is to hide art.

And that's true ...

but sometimes it's fun to share a little dig at the art with an audience!!

And the question to answer today is ...

Why are you speaking?

Yes, that's right, why?

Because you can? Because it feels good? Because you can make money? Because you can build your business? Because you can share your message?

What else ...?

Because you can position yourself as the expert in your niche? Because you can make back-of-room sales?

Wow all that from public speaking! What a fabulous thing, is public speaking!

But this particular speech or presentation that you are giving. Why are giving it, why are you presenting this particular one?

To be successful, all speakers need to refine this question and then provide an answer - one answer.

First we need to refine it down, and change the wording a tad to ...

What do you want your audience to do next?

How will they be different?

What will they be thinking that is different?

What will they do that is new or different? What will they say that is different?

You can define this as an outcome. It's a useful word, "outcome". It's been trendy lately.

An even more specific, useful term is "next step."

What will be your audience's next step?

Notice that is a singular noun, not a plural. Much as you would probably like them to sign up for your newsletter, give to your charity, send out a referral to their friends and buy your book, it's probably not going to happen... well not all at once, anyway.

K.I.S.S.

The next step is one step, a single step.

It is easier to make a single step into a focal point in your presentation, easier for your audience to remember one step, easier for them to implement.

Give your audience 5 options and they are muddied in your message, forgotten and lost in the to-do lists. Give them one, just one, next step.

So ... why are you presenting? The answer is: this one next step.

My review

Want to avoid killing your audiences with boredom? Are you killing your career, your business, your chances of winning that pitch with murderous presentations? Sin no more. Resurrect your speaking success with Rob Biesenbach's new book.

Rob brings skills as an actor, a speaker and a PR pro to this book; and not just skills but the entertaining, engaging communication style that made him a success there.

If you want to build your own success as a speaker, use this book. I don't like books that tell you what NOT to do, and I feared that "deadly presentation sins" might do just that. I was mistaken, and happily so. The book is incredibly positive and encouraging. Rob provides the theory and the fundamentals of presentation success from energy to engagement, from storytelling to structure, from focus to visuals and much, much more.

I enjoyed his conversational style, his humour and his turn of phrase. Especially I enjoyed his humility. These all add up to an encouraging, easy read. He uses examples from other experts. He also uses copious examples from his own experience, so I felt that this was guidance from an expert. More importantly, though, these examples give Rob's readers a multitude of practical ways to implement the strategies he has listed. This is what takes the book beyond being just another basic read about presentation skills.

Implement the guidance here and yes you will stand out - confident, comfortable and more engaging.
This is indeed the path to redemption!

“In public speaking, we must appeal either to the prejudices of others, or to the love of truth and justice. If we think merely of displaying our own ability, we shall ruin every cause we undertake.”

William Hazlitt

You have ideas for your speech. You know what you want to achieve with your presentation, but you’re stuck, trying to find a powerful slant ... and material that will give your points life? Where will you find the stimulus to develop your ideas?

Look ...

Magazines. Again, you are reading these already. Look at them from the slant of your speech. And look with new eyes at the racks in the newsagents, the library and the train stations.

Look at Facebook. Go beyond the ordinary and let your mind and the ideas you have already interact with what you see.

Look at Pinterest. Why did the person upload these pictures and/or text? How would you have dealt with that material?

Slide your eyes around your world. Catch the corners and edges of life and look at what happens, why it happens and what might have happened instead, all with your particular speech topic in mind.

Somewhere, a idea will develop, a crystallisation of your thoughts and attitudes, something that will hook your audience with its simplicity, its originality and its relevance to their worlds.
